I've been a long time Apple user and want to share my experiences with those of you who are potentially considering getting a Mac of your own. My first computer was the Apple IIe. I've been a loyal fan ever since, and it has come with a price. I was ridiculed during my youth for not having a PC, so I've always been in tune with the differences between the two. All of my friends owned PC's, working their way from DOS up to the most modern Microsoft software. Only until a few years ago have the tides started to sway.

In fact, one person who ridiculed me more than most now calls himself the "Mac Guru." He has his reasons for converting to the greatest computer operating system of all time, but they're not what I'm here to tell you. Most PC users have struggled for years with the pitfalls of a windows machine. I've been forced to work with them at work, so I too am well aware.

I think what prevents them most from switching from PC to Mac is their unwillingness to get through the learning curve that MUST be associated with a different computer OS. What they don't realize is that using a Mac is FUN! The learning curve is more like "Wow, that is really simple and intuitive. I didn't even need to read any help documents, or instructions." Where on a PC you're pulling you hair out reading messages that make absolutely no sense. And problems happen that result in a 3 hour call where you're booting into safe mode and checking this setting, and that setting, and rebooting, and screaming "AHHHHHHH" at the top of your lungs!

Macs just work - period, end of story. Their hardware is top notch, and in the event of a hardware failure, Apple is great about getting your computer fixed under warranty and sent right back. Several friends have received whole new machines, or their machine had some extra upgrades added at no additional cost while they were out. How is that for customer service? I often keep my Mac laptop on for years on end, without rebooting. Seriously, can any other PC computer manufacturer boast that? While using a PC at work I often rebooted as many as 10 times during a typical day. Usually losing the work that I had been doing since the last reboot.

Apple's design of the Macintosh is as simple and elegant as the operating system itself. Things are presented in a logical fashion, and it is virtually impossible for the new user to screw things up. Every device is plug and play, meaning it just works when you plug it in. Do you know exactly what that means? There is no need to install software, reboot, and scream with pain when things don't work.

Here are some other benefits to owning a Macintosh. Better Graphics: Both the processing and the display is better. Making videos, gaming and movies so much better! Better reliability: Things just work! No installing drivers, updating drivers, and all the headaches that are just ingrained in a PC. Better Performance: Apple uses quality components. Not junk that will break in just over a year. I've used all my apple Mac computers for at least 7 years, and I still have them! I often pass them on to family members or set them up in a corner. They're still running just like new! Better Interface: Everything is logical. There is no guessing what things do! The ease of use is unbelievable.

In the end, why buy a computer that tries to imitate Apple and does not have one original thought? Why not get the real deal right in the beginning? Macs are more than one step ahead of their competition in so many ways. It's a shame that so many people are simply unaware of the greatness and simplicity that is a Macintosh computer. There are literally thousands of commands and sub-commands available to configure a Cisco security appliance. As you gain knowledge of the appliance, you will use more and more of the commands. Initially, however, there are just a few commands required to configure basic functionality on the appliance. Basic functionality is defined as allowing inside hosts to access outside hosts, but not allowing outside hosts to access the inside hosts. Additionally, management must be allowed from at least one inside host. Here are eight basic commands:
**interface**
The interface command identifies either the hardware interface or the VLAN interface that will be configured. Once in interface configuration mode, you can assign physical interfaces to switchports and enable them (turn them on) or you can assign names and security levels to VLAN interfaces.
**nameif**
The nameif command gives the interface a name and assigns a security level. Typical names are outside, inside, or DMZ.
**security-level**
Security levels are used by the appliance to control traffic flow. Traffic is permitted to flow from interfaces with higher security levels to interfaces with lower security levels, but not the other way. Access-lists must be used to permit traffic to flow from lower security levels to higher security levels. Security levels range from 0 to 100. The default security level for an outside interface is 0. For an inside interface, the default security level is 100.
In the following sample configuration, the interface command is first used to name the inside and outside VLAN interfaces, then the DMZ interface is named and a security level of 50 is assigned to it.

In the following sample configuration, an IP address is assigned to VLAN 1, the inside interface.

**switchport access**
The switchport access command on the ASA 5505 security appliance assigns a physical interface to a logical (VLAN) interface. **nat**
The nat command enables network address translation on the specified interface for the specified subnet.

The number "1" is the NAT I.D. which will be used by the global command to associate a global address or pool with the inside addresses. (Note: NAT 0 is used to prevent the specified group of addresses from being translated.)

**global**
The global command works in tandem with the nat command. It identifies the interface (usually outside) through which traffic from nat'ed hosts (usually inside hosts) must flow. It also identifies the global address which nat'ed hosts will use to connect to the outside world.
In the following sample, the hosts associated with NAT I.D. 1 will use the global address 12.3.4.5 on the outside interface.

In this additional example of the use of the "global" command, the interface statement tells the firewall that hosts associated with NAT I.D. 1 will use the DHCP-assigned global address on the outside interface.

**route**
The route command, in its most basic form, assigns a default route for traffic, typically to an ISP's router. It can also be used in conjunction with access-lists to send specific types of traffic to specific hosts on specific subnets.
In this sample configuration, the route command is used to configure a default route to the ISP's router at 12.3.4.6. The two zeroes before the ISP's router address are shorthand for an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and a mask of 0.0.0.0. The statement outside identifies the interface through which traffic will flow to reach the default route.
ciscoasa(config-if)# route outside 0 0 12.3.4.6
The above commands create a very basic firewall, but frankly, using a sophisticated device such as a Cisco PIX or ASA security appliance to perform such basic firewall functions is overkill. Other commands to use include hostname to identify the firewall, telnet or SSH to allow remote administration, DHCPD commands to allow the firewall to assign IP addresses to inside hosts, and static route and access-list commands to allow internal hosts such as DMZ Web servers or DMZ mail servers to be accessible to Internet hosts.

The larger size of the DX, while an asset to many, also brings attention to its high cost compared with other equally sized, and greater featured electronic book readers. While the newer display is larger and more ideal for many viewing conditions, there remains something to be said for a smaller gadget that is more easily portable.

Yes, you watch every penny and if you can save one or two on none-essential products then you will. I would class printer cartridges as a distress purchase, show me someone who thinks nice and happy thoughts about buying their next office consumable and I will show you a dull person indeed!

I remember finding an online store that promised me endless refills for the price of one cartridge. So I had this decision to make:

Do I buy a 500ml bottle of ink that would probably last me ten years or go with the already recycled cartridge, at the same price?

I knew I would never use up all the ink, but went with it as the site explained it was oh, so easy to refill the little things. I received the bulk ink without any problems ... until I started using it.

• The black cartridge only seemed to take a dribble of ink at any one time – so I had to refill it after printing every two sheets or so! After contacting the technical support they advised that this type of cartridge needed to be filled under a ten bar vacuum, Hmmm really.

• After filling up the colour cartridge, all I got was a green hue over all my prints, no matter what colour it was meant to be printing. Again technical support said I must have put the wrong colour in the wrong chamber, or the cartridge head had become contaminated. Contaminated with what I thought, do I now need to buy a Geiger counter and test it for radiation?

• I got ink all over the sink, my fingers and the kitchen when I tried to squeeze too much ink into the little blighter and it overflowed without warning.

Print cartridges are utility objects, you don’t look at them or display them on the mantelpiece… you just want them to work properly and be affordable.

The problem again with refilling is that you end up with a cartridge that’s no longer holds any utility because it doesn’t really work very well.

Do you have the time to keep on taking the cartridge out of the machine finding the ink, associated paraphernalia like syringes, tubes and mopping up equipment? Some people are time rich and I suppose if this is you then refilling is the way to go. The problem is that I’m time poor and fed up wasting time on a none productive task like this, so now I just either buy the guaranteed, compatible or pre-recycled versions.

I would say that this is the middle road and most economical method for buying printer cartridges. They’re not as expensive as the original branded ones, with slightly less quality, but fine for the printouts I produce, which are not going to be stored by the British Museum for posterity’s sake!
